With the intense heat wave that has been sweeping the majority of the nation lately, (30 consecutive days of 100+ degree weather in Texas!) I know it is hard to think about looking good every day. You are probably more concerned about just remembering to drink enough water and trying not to sweat all over your clothes. But chances are that if you work in a corporate environment, you can’t afford to sit around in nothing but a pair of shorts all day. Plus you have dates to go on, parties to attend… the list goes on. So here are some tips for looking good when it is steamy outside.

Shoes- Both the boat shoe and white suede lace up shoes have been very popular for the summer of 2011. They can be worn without socks, but to prevent super sweaty feet you may wish to wear some small cotton socks that remain concealed inside the shoe. Avoid wearing athletic socks with dress shoes. Sandals and flip flops are acceptable, but opt only for nice leather ones. Plastic ones should be avoided entirely, or reserved only for the locker room and the pool.

Shorts- For a nice and still casual look, opt for flat front shorts in a lightweight cotton, seersucker, or khaki fabric. They should have a clean hemline and hit just above your knee. Pass on cargo shorts, which tend to look too bulky and unrefined.

Jacket- An unlined cotton sports jacket is an excellent option for summer. This allows you to look polished without adding weight to your appearance. This is a piece that is easy to dress up or down, so it is great for both work and a night out to dinner. Look for an unlined cotton jacket in a light color, such as a light gray or white, then pair it with a light blue button down shirt, and a pair of dark gray trousers with a white pin stripe. Leave the jacket open for a cool summery look. A jacket is also a great piece to transition you from the outdoor heat to a chilly air conditioned room.

Shirt- Generally speaking, it is better to pick a long-sleeved dress shirt and roll (not shove) the sleeves up to your elbows than it is to pick a short sleeved dress shirt. Long sleeved dress shirts, even with the sleeves rolled up, tend to look better with all types of tie styles. If you do select a short sleeved dress shirt, look for one that hits about an inch above your elbow. Also look for light cotton shirts in a bright madras or gingham print, or chambray shirts in light gray or blue. You can also look for cotton polyester blend shirts, which tend to wrinkle a bit less when it is very humid outside.

Pants- Reach for pants that are slightly loose fitting without being too baggy for the best comfort in summer heat. Pants that have clean lines and float away from your skin a bit are best. Although you may love your jeans, you may want to leave them in the closet ’til fall. Denim tends to be very heavy and hot in the summer, and when it gets sweaty, it really sticks to your skin.

Suits- Khaki cotton suits are a classic for summer. But if you find this color to be a bit bland, reach for a light gray suit instead. Light gray is a very versatile shade that looks good on just about anyone. Make sure to wear a brown belt and shoes, as black tends to look a bit heavy for summer. A linen suit is also a very nice option for summer, but as linen tends to get very wrinkly in the heat, look for a suit with cotton in the weave.

Accessories- Heavy jewelry tends to look overwhelming in the summer, and can even smell a little strange when it’s up against sweat, so if you are normally a jewelry wearer you may want to lighten up your load. Sunglasses are a must-have accessory for summer, so look for a pair that compliments your face structure, such as Wayfarers or Aviators.
